LookAtVietnam – Poor and rich families have different ways of rewarding their children for passing the exams.

Bich, who lives at No 26 Le Thanh Nghi street in Hanoi, after checking the scores her daughter got on the university entrance exams on the Internet, called to the office asking for permission to stay off work and then went to the motorbike shop in the afternoon to purchase a brand new Vespa LZ scooter worth $5,000. Her colleagues advised her not to purchase the luxury scooter, saying that the scooter could be stolen. However, Bich still insisted on purchasing the expensive scooter, saying that this was a gift worthy of her daughter’s study efforts.

In fact, Bich promised to give the daughter a luxury scooter before if she passed.

Hong Nhung, who has passed the exam to enter Hanoi University, received from her parents an air ticket and package tour to the UK on the same day she received the notice from the university of her passing the exams. Nhung said that she wants to travel to the UK because she wants to relax after a long period of hard learning, and also because her boyfriend is studying in the country.

“My boyfriend has left to study for two years, and the tour will help me be closer to him,” she said, adding that she needs a chance to relax before starting a new year of school.

Thuy Anh, who has just become a student of the Hanoi Banking Academy, showed her friends the Vaio brand name laptop and brand new Piaggio, which she said were gifts for passing the university entrance exams.

“When I finished secondary school, I got a computer. When I finished high school, I got a mobile phone worth more than 10 million dong. And these are now the gifts for the university entrance. I will be able to get anything when I finish university,” she said.

Thuy Anh’s father is director of a foreign-owned enterprise, while her mother is the leader of a government agency. Therefore, the expensive things are just ‘small gifts’ for their daughter.

The parents of Hoai Nam, a student of Hanoi Industry University, seem to be the biggest “players”. As Nam got 21 on his university entrance exams, he got $21,000 cash from his parents – $1,000 per point. They have also booked a tour for the son and his girlfriend to travel to China.

Not only rich parents, poor families have also been trying to give big gifts to their successful children. A father from Thai Nguyen province related that his daughter passed the exam for Hanoi Foreign Trade University. “This means that I will have to give her an LX. I promised to reward her with a motorbike which is similar to that of the girl next door.

“I have to borrow money from relatives to have enough money for the LX,” he said. He might be astonished to find that a LX costs as much as $5,000, enough to feed his whole family for years.

The people in Yen Lac of Vinh Phuc province have talked about the party congratulating some students passing the exams. T’s parents slaughtered three pigs and held a big party, invited local residents and relatives to attend the party which lasted two days. The party was described as a wedding because of the high number of attendants.

While rich families reward their children with gifts worth several thousand dollars, poor families only offer their children lunch with more meat and vegetables than on ordinary days.
