Parents now rush to bring children to schools where cameras are installed to allow them to watch their children’s activities from home.

“You will feel secure when keeping your children with us. The high technology cameras will help you watch your children in their learning, playing and sleeping activities from your home. You will not feel worried even if you are not with your children 10 hours per day.” Funny Children nursery school in district 5 in HCM City tries to persuade parents to send their children to the school.

The school has also instructed parents to install software at home which allows them to watch children’s images on computers.

Meanwhile, Chim Vanh Khuyen school has also advertised that it has a modern IP camera system, while it has technical officers who will go to children’s homes to install necessary software.

Luong Thi My Linh, Deputy Headmaster of Chim Vanh Khuyen, said that the school installed cameras after realising the demand of parents. Moreover, it wants to show how it is fulfilling the commitments it made to children’s parents.

Of course, the tuition fees of the schools with cameras like Chim Vanh Khuyen and Funny Children are much higher than those of schools with no cameras. In general, the tuition fees are 30-50 percent higher, at around 2-4 million dong per month.

Nguyen Thi Huyen, who is working for Bao Minh Insurance Company, said that she is sending her child to Funny Children. “The tuition level of 2.5 million dong is quite high if compared to normal schools. However, I think it is worthwhile, since I can see how my child eats and sleeps at school,” she said.

Le Thi Khanh Lan, a communications director, said that she feels more secure sending her child to a school with a camera. “I need to see how my child plays at school every hour. The boy can see me on the screen and he does not cry,” she said.

However, a lot of funny stories have been reported owing to the cameras. Phuong Thu, a reporter in HCM City, related that one day she saw on the webcam her child crying and no one soothed the crying baby. She hurried out of the office for the nursery school. The problem was that the server had an error on that day, and the image she saw had not been refreshed.

Nguyen Tien Truc from the HCM City bar association related that one day, he saw on the webcam a man striking the children. When he got to the school, he realised that the children were playing war.

Commenting about the hi-tech cameras, Pham Thanh Nhan, MA, from the HCM City University of Education, said this technology just helps monitor children, while it does not improve the quality of education.

“Parents should not think that educational quality is better at schools with camera systems,” he said.

Nguyen Thi Lanh from the HCM City Education Psychology Institute also said that a camera is not a standard to conclude a school has high educational quality.
