VietNamNet Bridge – The Ministry of Education and Training (MOET) is going to issue new decisions related to the renovation of teaching and learning methods.

Under the draft circular guiding the assessment and classification of primary school students MOET has introduced, comments, not marks, will be given in seven subjects, including morality lessons, nature and society (1st, 2nd and 3rd grades), music, art, handicrafts (1st, 2nd and 3rd grades), technology (4th and 5th) and physical exercise.

Teachers will give comments on the capability of students after they collect proof of their capability during lessons.

Meanwhile, teachers will give marks and comments in other subjects, including Vietnamese language, mathematics, sciences, history and geography, foreign languages, minority languages and informatics.

The comments will talk about the assessment of teachers on the capability and progress of students and their shortcomings. Teachers must not use words that may hurt students.

Four tests for Vietnamese language will be carried out a month as regular tests, while two tests will be required for mathematics. Meanwhile, one test is required for other subjects, sciences, history, geography, foreign languages, minority languages and informatics.

As for periodic tests, there will be four tests for Vietnamese language and mathematics every school year in the middle of the first and second semesters and at the end of the two semesters. Meanwhile, only two periodic tests are required for other subjects which will be carried out at the end of every semester.

Teachers don’t have to teach in accordance with textbooks

Deputy Head of the Secondary Education Department under MOET Nguyen Hai Chau said that the ministry will release a set of documents guiding the teaching based with standard knowledge. He said that teachers are not forced to teach all the things that are mentioned in textbooks.

Chau has stressed that MOET has never asked teachers to teach all the things written in textbooks, while it only mentions the standards which must be obtained during the teaching process.

Chau said that textbooks can serve as ‘materials’ for teachers to apply in their teaching. ‘If teachers say that they have to teach all the things mentioned in textbooks, this means that they do not well understand the requirements on them,” Chau said.

Mathematics, physics, chemistry to be taught in English

MOET has said that in 2009-2010, the ministry will begin building a network of high-quality high schools across the country which will serve as pioneers in fulfilling new education goals.

Under the programme, some of the 74 operational gifted schools will organise classes which students go to both in the morning and afternoon. Currently, only four percent of high schools have such classes. The students of high schools will have more English hours (eight hours per week), while mathematics, physics, chemistry will be taught in English on a trial basis.
