LookAtVietnam – Many teachers in Phan Rang-Thap Cham City in Ninh Thuan province have been forced to wear labels to indicate that they are “substandard teachers”

For the 2009-2010 academic year, all teachers in the city who do not meet education standards must now wear new tags with their names and words meaning “substandard secondary school teacher”, or “shoddy nursery school teacher.”

Even the head of the English teachers’ team at a secondary school in the city must wear a tag that classifies him as an inferior teacher.

This decision by the Phan Rang-Thap Cham Education and Training Sub-Department has outraged educators in the city, who believe that this requirement is offensive to teachers.

One secondary school principal expressed his feelings to Saigon Tiep Thi reporters: “I feel so sorry for my colleagues who have to wear such tags.” Meanwhile, the teachers who must don the disparaging titles on their chests say that they feel ashamed.

A teacher with 29 years of experience in working as a chemistry-biology teacher, revealed: “Honestly, I cannot wear the tag while teaching, although I know that I am violating the regulations.”

“How can you dare to teach when students know that you cannot meet education standards?” he questioned.

Nguyen Thi Mau Don, Head of the Education Sub-Department of the Phan Rang-Thap Cham City, admitted that this is a mistake. Don personally does not agree with the policy and calls it an outrage to teachers. She believes that it is necessary to recall the tags immediately.

The Ministry of Education and Training sets up standards for teachers in order to set suitable salary levels for them, not as a method of punishment.
