Classes in danger of dying due to lack of students
Published: 30/09/2009 05:00
LookAtVietnam – Universities are considering shutting down study options because they can’t enroll enough students to make them viable.
The university has little choice as it is unable to find enough students to fill classes. Only 14 students applied to study post-harvesting technology while Japanese language received only five. The situation seems even more serious at Van Hien University, which may have to shut down three classes, including classes on business English and culture. This is the second consecutive year that the culture study option faces the problem. In 2008, the university had to ask the students, who registered to the study branch, to move to other faculties. Meanwhile, the HCM City University of Foreign Languages and Information Technology (Huflit) has sighed with relief as it has enrolled enough students for Chinese, Japanese and South Korean languages studies. Nguyen Quoc Hop, head of the training division of Van Hien Unviersity, said that classes which do not have enough students for three consecutive years will have to shut down. Foreign languages, which were once fashionable study branches options are now deemed less attractive. The number of students registering to study Japanese and Chinese began decreasing several years ago. Now, even English has also lost its attractiveness. The Van Hien University received only two registrations for Japanese and Chinese classes last year. Meanwhile, Le Thi Ha, deputy president of Vo Truong Toan University in Hau Giang province has officially announced it has stopped teaching English. The students, who had registered to study English will be requested to take other options or move to other universities. The Many classes will not be so lucky. VietNamNet/DT, TP
