LookAtVietnam – A sizeable number of students are facing serious financial problems. Many have no idea how they will pay for their education over the next four years.

The new student has arrived in Hanoi to register for study at university

Dung brought his son to Hanoi on September 4 to register for study at the Hanoi Civil Engineering University. He planned to return home in the afternoon to save money on a hotel room and expensive meals.

Unfortunately, Dung’s son could not register, so Dung had no choice but to remain in Hanoi for several days. By the time his son had finally registered, the money Dung brought “had vanished into thin air.”

“Four million dong is all I had. I paid 3 million dong to cover my son’s study expenses. I planned to leave one million dong for him, but I have spent it on renting a room, travel, and meals,” Dung complained.

“Too many students are registering at the same time and all of them have to wait their turn in line,” explained Vu Thi Xuan from Nghe An province, who brought her brother to register. She also regretted losing money just to wait in Hanoi.

Hai from Bac Giang province talked with a Dan Tri reporter while sitting outside the Hanoi Trade University, waiting to register his son. He calculated that during his days of waiting, he had spent as much as it costs to feed his whole family for one month.

Hai previously thought that the money earmarked for his son would be enough for one month. Now, the money has already run out. He must borrow money from relatives to cover his son’s study expenses.

“We are exhausted already and my son has just started his university studies,” he stated.

Tran Huu Hoang from the Gymnastics and Sports University related that he has burned through four million dong after just two weeks in Hanoi. He paid 1.8 million dong for tuition and one million dong for room rental. In addition, he purchased meals and furnishings for his room.

Hoang now has only one 100,000 dong bank note in his wallet now, but he dares not ask for more money from parents.

“They (the parents) understood that studying would be costly, but they would not understand how four million dong could be gone in two weeks,” he lamented.

Lien, a new student at Hanoi University, said that she is still using other students’ basins because she does not have enough money to purchase her own. “I only have one suit for class,” she said. “I don’t know how I’ll manage.”

However, she is still luckier than her neighbor. “He does not even have enough money to pay for tuition,” Lien reported.

“He does not have money for meals, so he eats instant noodles every day,” she added.

“As soon as I am settled, I will look for a job to cover my studying expenses,” said Thuy, just three days after she registered at the Hanoi University of Natural Sciences.
