Meanwhile for urban students, over 50 percent meet the requirements for mathematics, literature and English. However, 55 percent of students in remote areas are hitting the knowledge standard in mathematics. They also score 60 percent in literature and 40 percent in English.

Students of 10th, 11th and 12th grades in five cities and provinces, including Dien Bien (a highland province), Hai Duong, a province in the northern flat country, Lam Dong, one of the five provinces in the Central Highlands, Kien Giang, a Mekong Delta province and HCM City, joined the test.

The Ministry of Education and Training sets the mathematics, literature and English tests based on standard curriculums and advanced-level curriculums

According to the ministry, the tests aim to find out the percentage of students who can meet minimum learning levels. Students are then divided into two groups. One made up of students meeting standards and one that includes substandard students.

Students scoring lower in the tests will receive extra help from their schools.
