Country kids beat city slickers in mathematics and literature

VietNamNet Bridge – Latest tests show high school students in rural and remote areas are out scoring urban students in mathematics and literature.
In literature, rural students averaged 530.57 scores with students in remote areas scoring 510.96. City students trailed with only 481.43. However it wasn’t all bad news for urban students as they beat their rural counterparts in English. Here they averaged 508.19 scores with rural students scoring 494.83 and students in remote areas gaining 457.2. In general, the ministry has found that more than 70 percent of rural students can hit the required standard for mathematics and literature while only 50 percent of reach the same level in English lessons. Meanwhile for urban students, over 50 percent meet the requirements for mathematics, literature and English. However, 55 percent of students in remote areas are hitting the knowledge standard in mathematics. They also score 60 percent in literature and 40 percent in English. Students of 10th, 11th and 12th grades in five cities and provinces, including Dien Bien (a highland province), Hai Duong, a province in the northern flat country, Lam Dong, one of the five provinces in the Central Highlands, Kien Giang, a Mekong Delta province and HCM City, joined the test. The Ministry of Education and Training sets the mathematics, literature and English tests based on standard curriculums and advanced-level curriculums According to the ministry, the tests aim to find out the percentage of students who can meet minimum learning levels. Students are then divided into two groups. One made up of students meeting standards and one that includes substandard students.
