Many parents are up in arms after a primary school in HCM City’s Hoc Mon District transferred more than 100 children to another school citing lack of rooms.

Bui Van Ngu Primary School announced September 20 that the students have to join Tay Bac Lan Primary School.

Its explanations sound hollow since the number of children admitted was based scrupulously on plans the school had made several months earlier, while the law does not require children to furnish the residency certificate to join schools.

Worse still, some other kids with temporary residency certificates continue to study at the school. When asked for an explanation, the school said they are continuing since their siblings already study there.

One of the biggest complaints is that facilities at Tay Bac Lan, which used to be a restaurant, are poor – its spiral staircase may be dangerous to young children and it has no playground since.

The Education Law prohibits discrimination among students but the management of Bui Van Ngu Primary School has apparently yet to realize this.
