VietNamNet Bridge – The Ministry of Education and Training (MOET) is to inspect universities to investigate tuition fees.

Students of Phuong Dong University pay tuition

MOET officials will tour up to nine Universities across Viet Nam with this figure possibly set to increase.

The trip was confirmed in Tuoi Tre newspaper which quoted Than Thi Ha, the director of the university education department under MOET.

“The Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of MOET, Nguyen Thien Nhan has been instructed to set up inspection delegations to examine tuition collection and at some universities,” Ha confirmed.

Regarding its schedule , Ha said MOET’s officials will tour some eight or nine universities nationwide, within one month. However, the number of universities to be inspected may increase if deemed necessary.

Ha says inspections aim to find out how universities are collecting and using fees. The findings will help MOET compile a document guiding operations.

However, Ha admitted MOET has been interested in information provided by local newspapers about overly high tuition levels set by universities. Many universities have been found requesting high and unreasonable additional fees.

“We will ask universities to explain the tuition collection,” Ha said.

According to Tuoi Tre, students of Hong Bang not only have to pay 6.98-13.98 million dong per school year in tuition, but also other fees totaling 531,000 dong for female students and 601,000 dong for males.

This includes the university’s leadership forcing students to pay for uniform and bags. One student claims that while a bag might cost him several tens of thousands of dong externally – he is forced instead to pay 138,000 dong to buy directly from the university.
