LookAtVietnam – Credit-based training schemes have become the choice of many universities but while it offers opportunities there are problems too.

The credit based training scheme is the choice of the students, who want to shorten study time, because they can register to fulfill credits within the time they want. It is also the choice of students, who want to prolong their study period, or resume it at a later date.

Students choose the credit-based study scheme also because they believe that it allows them to self-study. Under the scheme, lecturers always give topics to students for researching. As students can work in teams when developing the topics, they can exchange views and learn from each other. It also helps improve presentation skills which are believed to be lacking.

However, a lot of students say they feel disappointed with the new scheme. Students believe that the emphasis on study in your own time explains why many universities are reluctant to invest in classrooms and lecturers.

In addition, online registrations can also prove difficult. Ly Na, a student of the University of Social Sciences and Humanity, said previously, students had to come to the university’s office to make study registrations. Students had to scramble for seats at classes to study the subjects they wanted. Now students can register study via Internet, but nothing has improved.

“There are too many students accessing the university’s website, which makes it jam regularly. And if you are not fast during registration, you may have to wait until next year,” Na said.

Even when students successfully register study subjects, they still face problems.

Thu Huyen, a student of the Hanoi National University, complained that the current scheme does not encourage students’ self-study.

“It is simply because there are not enough syllabuses and documents for students,” she said.

Huyen also said that a lot of universities now have to rent classrooms and material facilities, stressing training will not be effective in such poor conditions.

Because of too many problems, a lot of educators have been asked to rethink if credit based training schemes should be applied at this moment.
