LookAtVietnam – Hanoi has decided that teachers must not assign homework to day students. Yet other parents insist that homework is necessary.

The parent of the student of Nguyen Du School stated said that her child usually finished doing homework at 11 pm, leaving the child no time to relax or to “just be a kid.”

According to Head of the Primary Education Division under the Hanoi Education and Training Department Pham Xuan Tien, the city education department has instructed teachers not to assign homework so that students have more time to relax. However, some students still have daily homework assignments.

One parent with a son at Quang Trung Primary School, related that her child has homework in mathematics, Vietnamese language, literature and French every day. Parents must sign students’ homework everyday to confirm that children have fulfilled exercises. Teachers will check and grade all homework.

A father of a son who is studying at a primary school in Cau Giay also said that teachers give homework and also ask students to prepare lessons for the next day’s classes.

Teachers, fearing punishment for not following the city education department’s instructions, assign homework only when parents argue that their children need to do homework.

Thanh A, the mother of a Nguyen Du Primary School student, revealed that parents argued at the PTA meeting earlier this school year on whether or not to give homework. They all agreed that two exercises would be given weekly. The parents all signed a paper that explained that they had asked teachers to assign homework.

Thanh A believes that students need to have homework, but she believes that one hour of work per evening is enough.

Teacher Nguyen Thi Hue city from La Thanh Primary School in Hanoi has confirmed that many parents still want teachers to assign exercises so that students stay busy and will spend less time watching TV or playing games.

In fact, many parents make their children do homework even if teachers do not assign exercises. Thu Huong, a first grade student of Chu Van An School, revealed that everyday she studies with her mother.

Meanwhile, Director of the Primary Education Department under the Ministry of Education and Training, Le Tien Thanh, said that the ministry does not set homework regulations because it depends on local conditions.

Thanh stressed that there are four main requirements for successful primary education: students need to be healthy; they need to be obedient and sympathetic; they need life and communication skills; and students need to enjoy school. This means that learning is the fourth most important factor for primary school students.
