LookAtVietnam – Students just have to submit the necessary documents and pay tuition fees to be able to follow postgraduate courses – not pass entrance exams.

Students of the HCM City University of Technology

While, in principle, students must pass entrance exams to be able to follow postgraduate training courses to obtain a masters degree, that isn’t always the case.

Many can learn even when they have not taken the entrance exams or have failed them. These “special learners” go to class every day like other learners and pay the same tuition. However, within five years, the special learners have to pass the entrance exam.

A postgraduate learner at the HCM City Economics University said that his class has 100 learners, including 30 ‘special students’ who have not passed entrance exams. He said that there is no difference in study schedule, tests and exercises for the learners.

She said that many students gave up class after three years of learning, because they could not pass the entrance exams even after several attempts.

However, she highly appreciates the ‘flexible’ enrolment for postgraduate training courses applied by universities.

“I failed the entrance exams. In principle, I would have to repeat the exams the next year and if I pass, I would only be able to begin studying the following year. However, with the flexible model, I do not have to waste a year.”

“Once learners go to class, they have the driving force to learn well so as to pass exams,” she added

Head of the training division of a university, who asked to be anonymous, said that without such a flexible scheme, universities would have too few students. He said that entrance exams for postgraduate training are very difficult and very few students can pass the exams.
