LookAtVietnam – While experts believe that physical punishment is unacceptable, they remain sympathetic with teachers who have reacted wrongly while under pressure.

“Teachers nowadays are always under a great deal of pressure from the so-called ‘achievement disease’,” said Dao Thi Van Anh, MA, from the Education Research Institute.

“Achievement disease” outlines the phenomenon whereby every teacher is under pressure to create more and more good students, because good students mean promotion and more money.

However, If teachers are unlucky enough to have bad students, they may face the danger of being only able to find work in remote areas.

Education experts say teachers getting angry when students are lazy and unfocused can be blamed on this situation. In extreme cases this has meant, teachers resorting to beating students.

Agreeing that teachers nowadays are burdened with “achievement disease”, Duong Van Ngoc, one teacher wrote that he and his colleagues have become tired with the instructions from higher levels and targets set for teachers. Ngoc wrote that the pressure on teachers and their worries about the daily life can lead to unsuitable behavior towards students

“A lot of colleagues have to leave schools because they have accidentally behaved wrongly behavior towards students, despite having high qualifications and real enthusiasm,” Ngoc said.

Tran Van Dai Loi, deputy head teacher of Thai Binh Private School in HCM City, said teachers nowadays have to spend more time do “unnecessary tasks”. Every year, teachers have to think of new initiatives and submit them to managers who never act on them.

So how should teachers deal with naughty and unfocused students?

Vo Viet Nam, a reader of Tuoi tre newspaper, wrote that there are several groups of teachers. The first group includes the teachers who scold and despise students. The second includes teachers who try to soothe students into obedience. The third group of students just teach by the book and pay no special attention to anyone and don’t care if no one is listening.

Other teachers belong to a fourth group of teachers, who use combined measures: they scold students sometimes and then persuade them to learn with understanding and sympathetic behavior. However, when they feel too tired, they will ‘ignore’ students. They always try to help students study and do not want any one of them to have to repeat a class.

Other teachers belong to the fifth group, who give good marks to good students and bad marks to naughty ones. These teachers always face the risk of getting disciplined for failing students.
