LookAtVietnam – High tuition fees for repeating studies haunt students especially those already struggling to meet first time fees.

The current ceiling tuition for students on training scheme is 240,000 dong per month. However, no ceiling is set for repeat studies. This explains why tuition costs for repeating some subjects can sometimes be even higher than tuition costs for the whole semester.

For examples, the Van Hien University in HCM City stipulates that tuition for repeating study is 100,000 dong per learning unit. In general, there are three units for every subject. As such, if repeating one subject, students will have to pay 300,000 dong at least.

“As for the subjects with up to 8 learning units, students will have to pay more, which is unaffordable for us,” said Giang, a student of Van Hien university.

A student of the HCM City University of Technology complained that he “owed” two subjects and he had to learn the two subjects again.

“I have to pay nearly four million dong this semester for normal tuition and the tuition of the two repeated subjects,” he complained.

Tuition for repeating study appears to be different for different schools. Some schools collect 35,000 dong per credit, while others demand hundreds of thousands of dong. A cost of 70,000-80,000 dong per credit is now being applied by the Transport University at the HCM City University of Polytechnique Education.

According to Nguyen Thi Mai Binh, head of the training Division of Hung Vuong University, the tuition costs for repeating study are set by universities and are always higher than the normal tuitions.

When asked why the cost of repeating studies are higher than normal tuition costs stipulated by the State, schools said the State only subsidizes regular training.

The high tuition costs have been burdening students, especially poor ones. Many feel ashamed to ask for money from parents and often try to find the cash themselves. Others end up selling mobile phones or other possessions.
