VietNamNet Bridge – Four curriculums of Vietnam’s universities have been recognized by AUN as meeting ASEAN standards.

These assessments included information technology training curriculum at Hanoi National University as well as electronics-telecommunications, information technology and computer science & engineering curricula at HCM City National University

All four received good results, score of 4 that are on par with regional averages. The curriculum on information technology training of HCM City University of Natural Sciences at HCM City National University got the highest mark of nearly five.

Dr. Anh has described the result as “satisfactory.”

“I once joined AUN’s delegation to give assessments to the curriculums of the universities in the Philippines, Indonesia and Malaysia,” she explained. “The highest scores given were just five or six. Therefore, Vietnam’s results are very satisfactory, which shows that Vietnam is on par with regional universities and that Vietnam is able to integrate into the region.”

The aim of the AUN program assessment is to prepare for cross-university training among regional universities that can meet the standards. The best universities of the 10 countries in the region have volunteered to join the programme assessment. The assessment also helps universities better understand one other. Once universities have confidence in each other, they can develop credit transfer standards and cross-university training within the AUN network.

HCM City National University had its curriculums assessed by AUN in order to find out its strong and weak points in its programs so that it can draw up a suitable investment plan to upgrade training quality, especially in the polytech and economics study branches.

As the curricula have been recognized as meeting regional standards, member universities of HCM City National University will make appropriate investments to upgrade its curricula further.

Once Vietnamese universities’ curricula are recognized as meeting regional standards, Vietnamese students will be able to transfer credits to study in area countries. Vietnamese universities will also be able to attract regional students.

AUN will organize a conference at HCM City National University on January 19 and 20 to discuss credit transfer. After that, AUN members will decide what to do to achieve cross-university training.

“I think that it will take some two or three years to complete the framework for the training,” Anh speculated.

She went on to say that in 2010, HCM City National University plans to have all its programs assessed by AUN.
