LookAtVietnam – Many people may mistakenly think that this is a primary school student, but in fact, he is a second year university student and he is making extraordinary achievements.

Nguyen Van Ke and his friends
Determination is the key to success

Nguyen Van Ke, a student of the Hanoi Industry University, has the nickname ‘baby’, because he only reaches the waist of other classmates.

However, the baby prides himself on his strong will. “If you lack will, you will not have anything. You need to beat any problems you face and achieve significant things in your life.”

Ke gets up early every day, walks on foot to the bus station to take a bus to school, and returns mid day to a rented room in Kieu Mai village which he shares with two other friends. “Everyone looks at me with curiosity every time when I get into bus. Some high school students even call me ‘the child’,” Ke said and smiled.

“I looked healthy and beautiful when I was born, like many other children. However, when I reached the first class, when my friends were growing up, I was becoming shortee,” he said.

Ke has been take to many hospitals to get medical treatment. Doctors said that he has problems with hypophysis. He has got taller by some ten centimeters over the last 13 years.

“All family members felt sad when they knew that there was no hope for my problem. I often thought about giving up school because friends teased me,” Ke related

“However, I later thought that I must not get desperate. I need to become stronger and optimistic. I need to show to other people that although I am small I can do big things,” he said

He kept going to general school. When he arrived for high school final exams, the security guard at first did not allow him to enter the exam room. It took him a while to persuade the security guard that he was an examinee.

The dream of becoming a boss

And now the dream of the small boy has become true: he has become a student in electronics at Hanoi Industry University.

When asked about plans for the future, the tiny boy said that he will set up a workshop of its own where he will receive electronics products to repair. “I will become a boss,” he said.

Ke also has a job at FPT Telecom Company. His main job here is to post advertisements, which can brings him some extra cash. The small wage allows him to ease the burden on parents’ shoulders. However, more importantly, Ke says, the job can offer experience which will be very useful for his future job.

Pham Hoai Thanh, a student of the Hanoi Transport University said that Thanh and his friends adore Ke because Ke is good to everyone.

“I can learn so much from Ke while I live with him. You need to have a strong will to succeed,” Thanh said

Nguyen The Ban, the father of the tiny boy, is a war veteran. He was in army in 1970s, then returned to the home village and started a family.

“Ke is an optimistic and sentimental boy. We are proud of him,” he said about the son.
