LookAtVietnam – While Bui Nhu Lac, the teacher-rapper, has stated that he does not want to become famous, he has actually become well-known.

Teacher Bui Nhu Lac

LVH, a VietNamNet reader from Gia Lai province, violently opposes the teaching method. He said that if every teacher follows Lac’s way of teaching, schools will not need classrooms, they will need stages so that teachers can perform rap, plus cai luong, cheo or tuong (traditional Vietnamese singing styles) and maybe even pop music.

Another reader from Tay Ninh also wrote that Lac’s rap song is “unacceptable.”

“This is a pedagogical environment, a school, not film studio,” he wrote.

MT, a reader from Lao Cai, commented that Lac has broken the rules and ignored the syllabus by singing the rap song as a lecture.

BS in Quang Binh province said that teaching, a noble and serious career, will become a joke if teachers lecture through songs. “There must not be a school where teachers give lectures this way,” he wrote in an email to VietNamNet.

One reader from Hanoi is not too critical about the song, but she worries about the health of the teacher. “I wonder if he is healthy enough to sing the song for 45 minutes? Wouldn’t it be better if he offered a 5-10 minute song?” she questioned.

Many protested not only Lac’s way of teaching, but their dissatisfaction with the song’s lyrics.

NHL, a teacher from Nam Dinh, argued that all teachers have a responsibility to respect and preserve the national cultural character rather than spoiling it.

Another teacher, VC from NTU, who now lectures at a foreign university, claimed that the words are those of teenagers and do not fit the school environment.

Don’t be too conservative

While many people criticize Lac, he has received support from many other corners. A reader from Ninh Hai wrote: “Don’t be too conservative!”, meaning that any new way of teaching that helps students learn better should be respected.

“The function of the teacher is to make students feel happy and obtain knowledge,” she wrote, adding that it is not necessary to comment on whether or not Lac’s teaching method is a standard one.

H. from HCM City responded: “If you remain too conservative, you will never think of reforming Vietnam’s education.”

Other readers agree that it is not a bad thing to sing a rap song. They noted that a Japanese monk is famous for singing a rap song to attract people to the pagoda.

A.T. from Hanoi also thinks the words of Lac’s song, which observe the laziness of students, offer knowledge and convey the teacher’s wish for improved study, are nice.

Phikhanh in Hanoi thinks well of this teacher. “I think that Lac’s students will understand their teacher better and they will try to learn harder just as he wishes.”

“I don’t want to become famous”

Lac said that he composed the rap song “Teacher or Rapper”, in 2009 using the music from the song “Neu” (If) performed by NAH. In fact, Lac has composed seven rap songs, all about physics.

“Physics is a really heavy and difficult subject that makes people feel tired,” the young teacher explained when speaking about why he composed the rap song.

“The song has been spread by my students and then someone posted it on the Internet. Meanwhile, I never gave a lecture in class using the rap song,” he explained.

“I don’t want to become famous. Both my parents are teachers, and, in their eyes, teachers need to be serious instead of singing rap songs to students,” he admitted.
