Lying on a sick-bed with a stab wound on his left hand, Nguyen Minh Tu, a 11^th grade student of Hoang Dieu Victoria in Hanoi recalled that at noon on March 17, when Tu and a group of friends came to the school’s entrance, they saw two young men.

One asked: “Who is Dat?” and suddenly drew out a knife and stabbed Tu and his friends. Tu tumbled and fell, receiving just a stab to his left hand. Meanwhile, Dat, the student that the two students wanted to attack, made a lucky escape.

When asked who Tu thinks could be the culprit, he replied that he has no hard feelings. He recalled that four months ago, his class had some disagreement with a group of 10^th grade students at the same school. Tu thinks that revenge could be the motive.

According to Tu’s father, the fact that students are stabbed right in front of school and that people can bring weapons to school have really shocked parents.

The event took place near the headquarters of the O Dong Mac ward’s police station. “This shows that the gangsters disregard the laws,” he noted.

Prior to that, on March 16, a group of 8^th grade students of Cu Chinh Lan and Nguyen Van Troi Secondary Schools had an appointment with some others to settle a disagreement.

Luckily, someone discovered the plan and immediately called the police, who seized 10 students.

There have been so many battles among students recently that educators say school violence has become alarmingly high.

Van Nhu Cuong, Headmaster of Luong The Vinh People’s Committee in Hanoi not only watched the recent video clip showing a female student brutally striking another, but also viewed clips showing students beating each other in Hung Yen, Bac Giang and Phu Tho. The clips have been posted on the Internet in the last few days.

“It is really alarming,” Cuong admitted. “We have been focusing on developing the economy, while we have neglected students’ education. The morality of many students has been seriously declining.”

Cuong went on to say that many schools are still making light of teaching morality to their students.

“We do nothing but talk,” he complained. “Our schools do not have psychological consultant centers, while head teachers have never been in close touch with their students.”

He added. “Parents, who have been too busy earning money, do not pay attention to their children.”
