Vietnamese faces light up the US

One of the most brilliant academics in the US, where most overseas Vietnamese people live, is mathematician Ngo Bao Chau, whose research work was recognized by Time Magazine as one of the 10 most outstanding scientific discoveries of 2009.

In 2004, at the age of 32, Ngo Bao Chau was recognized by Clay Mathematics Academy for his scientific research and achievements in mathematics. Also in 2004, Chau was invited to work as professor by two prestigious French universities, Paris 6 and Paris 11 Universities.

Praised by Time Magazine at the age of 37 for solving the “fundamental lemma” as a “revolution” in mathematics, Chau successfully solved one of the most difficult questions of the world in the last 30 years.

Chau currently works at Université Paris-Sud and the Institute for Advanced Study (IAS) in Princeton and has an accepted an offer to become a professor at the University of Chicago.

“It is clear that he is among the best mathematicians of our age. I have great expectations from this man,” lauded Robert Fefferman, chief of Chicago’s Physics Department.

Among female scientists, Dr. Nguyen Thuc Quyen, a professor at The University of California at Santa Barbara, is one of the most brilliant, having been awarded the Alfred Sloan medal. Quyen was once a university student working extra hours cleaning cups to earn more money for study. Now she has become one of the leading professors of the university where she once studied.

Professor Charles Cuong Nguyen of Catholic University of America won the Lifetime Achievement Award of the District of Columbia Council of Engineering and Architect Society – DCCEAS and is also one of the famous Vietnamese names in the US.

Famous Vietnamese names in Europe

Philipp Roesler, a Vietnamese German, 36, became the youngest Federal Minister of Health in Germany in the second Merkel Cabinet in 2009. The young minister can trace his origins to Khanh Hoa province.

In Belgium, Dang Vu Thien Thanh appeared in many newspapers last year, where he received high appreciation for his talent and dedication. After graduating from Liege University, he won 12 excellent awards and is now the youngest member of the Belgian national doctors’ association.

Vietnamese pride in Russia

In April 2009, Vietnamese doctor Nguyen Ngoc Thach was awarded the “Millennium Portrait” medal in Moscow that recognized outstanding people who have contributed to Russia’s prosperity.

Currently, some 5000 Vietnamese students study and conduct research at Russian universities, receiving many international awards for their scientific research.

In 2009, 40 percent of Vietnamese students in Russia graduated universities with a red degree (for excellent students). Also, 86 additional students won awards from the Vietnamese Embassy in Russia. One student obtained second prize in the Russia Chemistry Olympiad.
