VietNamNet Bridge – MARD will propose the Government to cover tuition for students in forestry and agriculture study branches.

MARD leaders set up new requirements on training a high quality labor force in many key fields for development in the near future. These include forest resource management and development, land management, rural area modernization, forestry and agriculture processing, as well as water and valley resources management.

At a recent conference MARD leaders set up new requirements on training a high quality labor force in many key fields for development in the near future. These include forest resource management and development, land management, rural area modernization, forestry and agriculture processing, as well as water and valley resources management.

Nationwide 13 universities and junior colleges and 60 percent of vocational schools have forestry and agriculture departments. The number of graduates has decreased yearly and is unable to meet the rapidly increasing demand.

Explaining the shortage, Associate Professor Dr Nguyen Van Tuan remarked that unclear demand for labor in forestry and agriculture has created the problem. Tuan noted that Vietnam is still weak in forecasting the labor market, especially high quality labor.

The labor shortage in agriculture and forestry also means big opportunities for young people. They have a chance to contribute to the field that makes up approximately 25 percent of Vietnam’s GDP.

MARD’s strategy on forestry development in 2006-2020 calculates Vietnam needs to train 5000 students every year and also retrain key field personnel.

Vietnam Forestry University is the leading institution in the field of forestry and rural development, environment management and natural calamity prevention. The university now has 13,000 students with 21 study branches, including 10 branches relating to agriculture and forestry.

Tuition set by the university is one of the lowest, just 70,000 dong per credit. On average, a student takes 30-34 credits per year, totaling 2.1-2.4 million dong per school year, or 210-240,000 dong per month.

Every year, 1500 regular training graduates enter the university, which still cannot meet the increasingly high demand.

MARD will propose that the Government encourage students to follow agriculture and forestry studies by offering tuition support. Currently, students of pedagogical universities enjoy such preferences.
