LookAtVietnam – Very few students have registered to take university entrance exams in the social sciences.

Very few students have registered to take university entrance exams in the social sciences, favoring fields like economics instead.

April 10 was the university exams registration deadline for high school students. Preliminary statistics show that very few students opted for the C-group exams (literature, history and geography), while the majority chose A-group exams (mathematics, physics and chemistry).

The 2A + 1D formula

Nguyen Gia Thieu High School was the first school in Hanoi to hand in student files on university entrance exam registration to the Hanoi Education and Training Department. On average, every student made three applications.

According to Nguyen Gia Thieu Headmaster Dang Dinh Dai, a small minority made one, two or more than three applications. “Only those students with average ability and do not have clear idea about what to study, made too many applications,” he remarked

When asked about trends in study branches, Dai reported that the majority (57 percent) chose A-group exams, covering the natural sciences and economics. Meanwhile, 30 to 25 percent of students have registered to take D-group exams (mathematics, literature and foreign languages).

“I could not imagine that so few students would register to take C-group exams. Only six students in my school have selected C-group exams,” he confirmed.

It should not be a surprise. Only 20 students at the school registered to take C-group exams last year. The “2A+1D” formula is a favorite of many students at Nguyen Gia Thieu School. Students register for two A-group exams and one D-group exam. Most will not go to take D-group exams if they are sure that they can pass A-group exams (A-group exams will take place on July 4, while D-group exams will take place one week later).

Other schools in Hanoi report the same trend. Vietnam-Germany High School, for example, has only 42 out of 2,690 registrations for C-group exams.

On average, every student at the school submitted 3.5 applications.

Educators believe that the number of “virtual applications” this year is lower than 2009 (students can make more than one registration to take exams at more than one university now, but they will be able to take exams for only one or two universities later). Students of Le Quy Don High School, for example, have made an average of 2.4 applications in 2010, but made 3.3 applications last year. Doan Ket High School students made 2.4 applications instead of 2.7.

Economics favored

Most of students like fields related to economics. Trade University, for example, is the choice of many Nguyen Gia Thieu school students: 208 have registered to take exams at Trade University.

Other economics universities are also popular, including the Hanoi Economics University (152 applications), Banking Academy (113), Finance Institute (108). Meanwhile, 33 percent of applications from Vietnam Germany school are for exams to economics schools.
