VietNamNet Bridge – A hot topic on education forums now is whether or not to allow students to wear short skirts.

Twenty female students were barred from coming to school on March 30 because they wore short skirts. Wearing mini-skirts is a violation of school regulations that state students must wear skirts that reach the knee.

In October 2009, the Ministry of Education and Training also issued a document stipulating that students must wear skirts that reach knee-level.

These students knew they were not allowed to wear short skirts at their school. T. Anh, a 10th grade student of Phan Dang Luu High School, explained that sometimes teachers hold class inspections to find students wearing short skirts. If they find someone, they will ask the students to go home.

“I have had to go home several times,” T.Anh commented.

Despite warnings and disciplinary actions, T. Anh and many other students still like wearing their mini-skirts. T. Anh complained that the school uniform was not beautiful with its long skirt and made girls look like old women. Therefore, she had to shorten the hem to make it more beautiful.

Hanoi students agree, revealing that they too dislike the long skirts and ugly school uniforms.

Tung, a 10th grade of Nguyen Tat Thanh School, when describing his school uniform, claimed he was once mistaken for a cleaner while wearing his baggy uniform. Tung also pointed out the unflattering design and color of the winter school uniform.

“When I first came to school, I thought this was a raincoat, and only later realized that this was the school uniform that I must wear every day,” a female student of the 10th grade noted.

Nguyen Tat Thanh School is one of the few high schools in Hanoi that has a skirt as part of the uniform for female students

Hai, a teacher at the school, argued that the skirt is beautiful, is not loose-fitting and reaches the knee level. The students here, however, asserted that the uniform is not fashionable and they cut it to make them more comfortable and pretty. When asked why skirts are shorter, students replied that it is because they have grown up.

My, another student, observed that most of her classmates have their skirt hems shortened. She cut her hem too, but admitted that she does not like skirts to be too short.

The ideal of adults, nightmare for students

Adults believe that girls look more beautiful and feminine in long dress uniforms. They also think that girls in long dresses must walk more slowly and will not be able to fight each other.

Female students do not agree, citing a lot of reasons that long dresses should not be part of school uniforms. “What happens if you ride your bicycle and your long dress gets tangled in the bike?” Mai Thanh, a student questioned.

“Personally, I like long dresses, but other girls may not because long dresses are only suitable for slender girls,” posited Lan Huong, a 10th grade student. It is especially uncomfortable to wear long dresses, because girls must wear high- heels with long dresses.
