LookAtVietnam – Cao Thi Xuan T, a student, took 10 Valium tablets, a kind of sleeping pills, attempting to end her life.

T was born into a well-to-do family. T’s parents hoped that T would pass the university entrance exams easily, because T did well in school.

“If you pass the university entrance exam, besides the LX motorbike worth more than one hundred million dong, I will award a trip abroad,” her mother told the daughter before the exams.

The promised awards were really very big, and they put a hard pressure on the burden of the small student.

Though having good learning capacity, T did not do well at the high school final exams, and T just got enough scores to pass the exams.

Therefore, T’s parents tried to force T to study hard, day and night. T’s mother urged her daughter to take restoratives, and she made a lot of good meals for the daughter. Every day, T did not go to bed until two o’clock in the morning.

Every time, when T complained that she was too tired, she got a good scolding from her mother.

“You have to try to learn more and more. If you do not pass the exams, you will not only become miserable, but your parents will also feel ashamed to the neighbors. Try to learn if you still love your family,” the mother said.

However, T did not pass the university entrance exams. Returning from the exams, T did not want to have meals and she became close-mouthed. After that, she became aggressive and she had quarrels with the mother.

“I do not want to learn any more. Learn yourself if you want, but don’t force me to learn. I get a headache,” she said.

Feeling worried about her daughter, T’s mother decided to install a camera in the daughter’s room to keep watch over her. However, the camera did not help prevent the bad thing. T took more than 10 sleeping pills to end her life. She was hospitalized, helping her escape from danger. However, doctors said that the risk of her committing suicide again is very high.

Doctor To Phuong Vu from the Mental Hospital in District 5 in HCM City also related a case, in which a student committed suicide because she did not do well at the university entrance exams.

The patient was Truong Thuy A, who lived in Binh Thuan province. A once failed the university entrance exam for the second time. She thought she would score only 18 and fail the exams once more.

Worried about the exam scores, A became pessimistic and developed a complex about her situation. Within one week, A got into many drug stores and purchased 20 sleeping tablets and took all of them.

Tran Hai Y in Dong Nai province, who grades the university entrance exam for HCM City Economics University, said that two her sisters are now university students and was under much pressure to follow in their footsteps.

Returning from exams, Y changed her temper. She lost sleep and became aggressive. At the mental hospital, the doctor said Y suffered from depression.

Doctor Vu said that since the university entrance exam season began, he has at least one patient a day who suffers from learning-related illnesses.
