Heavy stress, worries about jobs and studying as well as uncertain love lives – all are burdens to young people nowadays. How do Vietnamese young people, newly graduated from a university, cope with real world challenges?

NTH, a Hanoi University of Social Sciences and Humanities graduate, was disappointed to only obtain an ‘above average’ rating for her degree. H blamed herself, thinking that if she had tried harder, then she would be rated higher.

Every time she fails to do something, she always blames herself: “When I was preparing for university entrance exams, I always felt stressed because I had to learn too much. I once thought of committing suicide to end my tense life. I was always under pressure by parents, relatives, friends and even neighbors. They criticized me when I failed to do something. I always felt inferior to my friends.”

Many university grads get a shock when study days end and they must face new difficulties in job searches.

When she was a student, Ngoc once worked as a tour guide for a travel firm, which let her enjoy life and believe that she was born to work as a tour guide.

Now things have become quite different. Ngoc graduated from university and wants to find a new job. Ngoc found a new job with a very attractive salary, but unluckily she did not get the position. She felt depressed and worried about unemployment, leaving home in the morning and returning in the afternoon, so that her parents would think she was working. In fact, Ngoc led a stressed life for many days, fearing she would not find a job.

Ngoc luckily found a solution. She decided to tell parents the truth. Moreover, she obtained employment in the marketing department of a media company with the initial salary of 1.5 million dong a month.

In another case, Huyen was shocked by the amount of work required at her first job and suffered from stress because she did not know what to do with her assigned tasks.

After several days, Huyen was told by her boss to meet a client to discuss the details of a contract. The only words Huyen said during the meeting were: “I’m not sure about that” and “I will have to consult with my boss and answer you later.” The meeting ended with the client asking: “Is this your first day at work?”

Huyen decided to quit after her one month of probation because she could not stand the pressure. She is looking for another job, one more suitable to her abilities.

Not all grads give up when they meet difficulties and they become more confident as a result.

Graduating Hanoi Industry University, Nam found a job at an automobile company in Hanoi. The job did not satisfy him and he tired of it quickly.

Nam decided to change his life. He read the books about psychology, met with friends who have good life plans and even sought out consultants to ask questions.

Now Nam feels happy with his life. He likes meeting friends and enjoys his work.

“Your life is decided by yourself. Try to have a more significant life,” he asserted.
