Summer is a ‘working holiday’ for students

Right after receiving the information that her daughter has passed the entrance exam to high school, Phi Thuy Van, who lives in District 3 in HCM City decided to bring the girl to an extra summer class. Van said if her daughter does not go to extra classes in the summer, she might lag behind her friends.

Van said it is a bit late to bring children to summer classes at this moment. Other children began going to summer classes several months ago, right after the high school entrance exams took place.

According to Van, at summer classes, her daughter can review the knowledge she learned in the previous school year and get new lessons to prepare for the tenth grade. Besides, the girl also needs to prepare for the test that will be organized at the beginning of the new school year in August.

“My daughter needs to do well on the test to be able to enroll in the class of the best students in the school,” Van said.

The summer plan of Bui Duc Thinh, a eighth-grader of Binh Tho Secondary School in Thu Duc District in HCM City was a bit different from that of Van’s daughter. After the 2009-2010 school year finished, Thinh had a two-week summer vacation, and then he returned to school to join the team of excellent students which will attend the city’s competition for excellent students. After learning for one month, he will attend the ‘military semester’ for 10 days and then returned to school.

Thinh’s father, Bui Quang Tien, believes that children need to relax during the summer but still thinks that if students do not attend summer classes, they will not be able to keep up with friends in study.

“Children need to go to summer classes, so that they do not forget the knowledge they learned in the previous school year. However, the curriculum of summer classes should not be too heavy,” he said.

Where to go in summer?

While many parents think that going to summer classes is a must, other parents bring their children to summer classes simply because they cannot bring them to anywhere else in the summer.

Tien said if his son does not have to go to summer classes, he will have only once choice: staying at home and playing games. He said he does not want his son to play games all the time.

Le Thi Mai in Go Vap District also said she has to bring the son to summer classes because she feels insecure when leaving him at home alone. She said that attending summer classes proves to be the best solution because her son has nowhere to go relaxing.

“The school’s Youth Union does not organise many extracurricular activities for students to join. Meanwhile, there are very few good entertainment places in the city,” she said.

Meanwhile, Le Huu Han, Headmaster of Can Thanh High School, said that about 20 percent of students spend their time playing online games in summer. He said schools need to design suitable plans to organize students in summer, where they can both learn and be entertained.
