A student criticized a teacher. The teacher, in reply, reviled the student. Is the student rude or the teacher unqualified? This has become a hot topic on education forums these days.

The story began when an 18 minute audio file was posted on Internet. The file showed how an English teacher, using rude words that should not be heard in a pedagogical environment, insulted a student. A lot of parents and educators have called Tuoi tre newspaper and said they were too shocked when opening the file and that they could not imagine a teacher could use such words.

T.N, an English teacher, born in 1980, has been working for Tran Phu Gifted School in Hai Phong City for two years. Meanwhile, L. is a good student of the school, who began learning English from an early age.

According to Bui Van Phu, the school’s headmaster, during the English lesson, L. poured scorn on the teacher and claimed that the teacher’s English knowledge was poor. As a result, T.N. used rude words to offend the student and spent 18 minutes of the lesson to criticize the students.

The information has immediately stirred the public. Parents believe that the teacher’s behaviour is unacceptable.

The audio file was posted on Internet on September 25, and on September 26, at the parents’ meeting held at the beginning of the school year, many asked the school’s leaders to explain the case.

Phu, in s conversation with Tuoi tre newspaper on September 28, revealed that after the incident happened, L. came to apologise for the rude behavior and the teacher also apologised L for her rude comments made.

However, since the audio file was posted on Internet, this is now not the matter between L. and T.N any more, because many people have heard the case.

Phu said on September 28, the management board of Tran Phu School gathered to discuss the disciplinary measures to be imposed on T.N. The teacher would be reprimanded before the school and she will not be allowed to teach the class.

Also according to Phu, the school is also discussing how to deal with the student, who has good learning capability, but acted unreasonably towards the teacher.

According to Do The Hung, Director of the Hai Phong Education and Training Department, the behaviour of T.N seriously violated regulations on teachers’ morality. This will badly affect the prestige of teachers in general, especially when Vietnam is trying to build friendly schools and train active students. The leaders of the education department have asked the school to impose heavy discipline on the teacher.

A lot of parents have expressed the same voice that the teacher needs to be disciplined heavily. lamckmat@… wrote to Tuoi tre that though students have a lot of shortcomings, the behaviour of the teacher is unacceptable and this must be criticized by society. He wrote that teachers should persuade students with their good knowledge, not with rude words.

Meanwhile, quach_hong_hanh_st@… does not think that recording the words of the teacher was bad behaviour. “If they (students) did not record the words, how can they prove that the teacher had spoken so rudely to them?” he questioned.

However, a lot of other parents have shown sympathy for the teacher. huynhngocphuoc1988@…, thinks that the teacher behaved badly, but also the student might have heavily criticized the teacher and made her lose her temper. The reader has called for the school to take a tolerant look at the teacher. “If the teacher is disciplined, this will prompt other students to behave like L.,” she said.
