| Vietnam to establish university of oil and gas
The university, located in Vinh Yen City, northern province of Vinh Phuc, will be managed by the Ministry of Education and Training. The university is expected to supply high quality human resource to the country’s oil industry. Most of high quality experts working in the country’s oil industry have been trained in foreign countries such as Russia, the US, the UK… Children in remote areas fight poverty and struggle to study A branch of an elementary school in the south-central province of Khanh Hoa is filled with children in poverty. Dinh Deo is a branch of Ba Cum Bac Primary School in the remote Khanh Son District. It has only two classrooms used for teaching 37 children studying from grade 1 to grade 4. Here, students at the 1st and 2nd grade level take morning class and those at the 3rd and 4th grade study in the afternoon. According to teacher Mau Hong Thai, most of the students here are from the Raglai ethnic group. Their parents are very poor and don’t have time to care for their children’s studies. “We don’t have good students here,” he said. “Because they have to help their parents do housework and never revise lessons at home.” Teacher Bo Xuan Van is teaching students in the first grade. He said that before, students left school very often. “We had to come to their houses and persuade their parents to take their children to class again,” Van recalled. “But nowadays this situation rarely happens.” After completing the 4th grade here, students will move to Doc Trau Primary School to continue studying in 5th grade. PM grants licence to new university Prime Minister Nguyen Tan Dung last Thursday approved the establishment of Tan Tao University (TTU) in Long An Province, which is expected to begin enroling students in the 2011-12 academic year. Located on 103 ha in Tan Duc Educational City, some 12km from HCM City, the new private TTU is unique among Vietnamese universities because it is based on an American model and has a non-profit status. TTU has been invested in and developed by Tan Tao Group, a leading diversified conglomerate encompassing industrial parks and infrastructure development that includes thermal power plants, renewable energy and water treatment plants, and media technology. Teaching and studying at TTU will be conducted in English. Students will study at the TTU campus for three years and the fourth year at a well-known university in the US, according to the Government’s website. Dung also appointed the Ministry of Education and Training to inspect TTU’s necessary facilities before it is allowed to open any faculty and enroll students in various fields of study. TTU’s mission is to produce graduates who will be experts in their fields, committed to life-long learning and adept in the use of creative and critical thinking. The chairwoman of Tan Tao Group and founder and chairwoman of the TTU Board of Advisors, Dang Thi Hoang Yen, said: “TTU is a Vietnamese university that will provide quality education to excellent students who need an opportunity (for an international-standard education).” At its full operation, TTU will have nine schools, with schools of Business and Economics, Engineering, and Computer Science and Humanities and Languages to be established in the first year of operation.
Students’ rotating waste bin wins city’s youth contest A group of university students has won first prize at the Ho Chi Minh City’s annual youth creativity contest with their design for a rotating bin supporting waste categorization. The prize was awarded to three students of Ton Duc Thang University at a ceremony on Sunday, local newspaper Saigon Tiep Thi reported Monday. A project to recycle wastes in schools, suggested by a group of students from HCMC University of Architecture, won second. Meanwhile, a pair from HCMC University of Technology scooped the third prize with an initiative to develop an environmental protection volunteer corps. This year’s contest was themed around conservation. Since its April launch, it received 205 ideas from young people across the country, the news source said. The youngest participant was a seven-year-old student in HCMC. Source: VNS, dantrinews, TN |
