In the mind of Vietnamese people, school is considered
the purest environment, where teachers have the complete respect from students.
However, a lot of shocking events that took place in 2010 forced people to
change their view.

Female students fought with each other; a teacher abused students; another
teacher has been accused of taking liberties with a female student – no one
could imagine that these things would happen some day.

The teacher who dropped impolite words

The story, which has recently caught the special attention from the public, is
the story of a teacher in Hai Phong City, who dropped surprisingly impolite
words in front of the class.

In early December, a video clip appeared on social websites which showed a
teacher surrounded by many students who asked her not to give low marks for the
teaching hour to the class. However, the teacher said: “I will never spare this
class”. After that, she said: “I am going to slap your face. You are so
impudent”.

These words, once post on Internet, have immediately raised high dudgeon from
the public.

The teacher is Hoang Thi Ngoc, born in 1960, Head of the Informatics Division in
the Hang Hai High School in Hai Phong City.

The incident happened on November 29 at a 12th class, where Ngoc had a teaching
hour. When Ngoc raised some questions to test if students had learnt their
lesson, many students got low scores. The class was very noisy and students did
not concentrate. Therefore, before leaving the class, Ngoc said that she would
give them a low mark to assess the teaching hour. However, many students went to
the teacher and politely asked her not to give their class bad assessments. Ngoc
lost her temper and swore in front of the whole group.

The behaviour of the teacher has raised controversies on education forums. Some
people believe that the teacher’s behaviour is unacceptable and that she must
resign from the post. Meanwhile, other people sympathise with the teacher,
saying that the students were rude.

In the latest news, Ngoc has been suspended to think about her behaviour.

Prior to that, on September 25, a clip posted on Internet by a group of students
of Tran Phu Gifted School in Hai Phong City, also showed how an English teacher
insulted a student. The 18-minute clip also caught the special attention from
the public.

School violence increasing

The year 2010 witnesses a lot of cases of female students fighting with each
other. searching on Google, one would see a lot of clips showing the fights
among female students. Educators have rung the alarm bell over the school
violence, saying that students behave like the “members of the underworld”.

On September 14, a clip showing a female student in Nghe An province being
violently beaten by a group of students was posted on Internet. In the clip, a
female student is being dragged on the road by three other students who said
rude words to her. More seriously, one of the three students trampled on her
head and face,.

The victim was Nguyen Thi Ha Nhu, a 12th grader of Nguyen Truong To High School
in Vinh City

Just several days later, on October 23, a clip appeared on Internet, showing a
female student beaten by other students right on a street in Quang Ninh
province. The fight took place because both the victim and the culprit loved the
same man in the province.

School violence has become the biggest problem in education. The most important
thing is that the society remains indifferent.

Teacher clamours for love?

In early December, local residents in Vinh Phuc province were stunned by the
news that a teacher in the province had been accused of taking liberties with a
female student. The teacher is thought to force the student to go to karaoke and
drink beer. The student later got into the state of panic and she took sleeping
pills to commit suicide.

However, the teacher has denied the accusation. The case is still under
investigation.
