The drainage channel where a boy fell into and disapeared Monday

A seven-year-old boy disappeared on Monday after falling into a flooded drainage channel in the central highlands town of Kon Tum on Monday.

Nguyen Bao Viet and a friend were walking home from Ngo Quyen Elementary School when they fell into the recently dug 1.5-meter-deep trench leading from a construction site near the intersection of Ngo Quyen and Nguyen Van Troi streets.

A passer-by managed to rescue the friend but Viet was swept away.

Many streets in Kon Tum were flooded by the heavy rain that afternoon.

Also on Monday, the Southern Hydrometeorology Center said the flood tide in Ho Chi Minh City on that day had reached 1.4 meters and caused flooding in many streets.

The southern metropolis will see two flood tides every month until the end of the year, according to the center.

It forecasts that half a dozen will exceed 1.4 meters and some could go as high as 1.55 meters to equal the 49-year record-breaking level set late last year.
