LookAtVietnam – Farmers in northern and northern central provinces, especially Nghe An, could get about VND4 million compensation for every hectare of rice destroyed

The Southern Plant Protection Centre warned the diseases could break out in next year’s summer-autumn crop if brown hoppers kept threatening the winter-spring crop.

The Deputy Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development, Bui Ba Bong, yesterday, September 24, confirmed that the ministry had submitted the Government the proposal.

Bong said the Government had decided to give Nghe An province eight tonnes of pesticides to destroy the brown hoppers.

Nguyen Quang Minh, head of the ministry’s Plant Protection Department, said that more than 13,000ha of rice had been affected by the disease, of which 8,000ha had been destroyed in the provinces of Nghe An, Thanh Hoa, Nam Dinh, Thai Binh and Ninh Binh.

According to the Southern Plant Protection Centre, eight out of 18 samples were infected by the diseases.

The centre warned the diseases could break out in next year’s summer-autumn crop if brown hoppers kept threatening the winter-spring crop.

Localities, especially those that have not planted a winter crop, have been told to sterilise fields.

Deputy minister Bong also asked the ministry’s Plant Department to re-examine rice breeds used in the northern provinces, many of which have not been tested and may be susceptible to diseases.
