Da Nang City residents salvage diesel from city drains as thousands of liters leaked a local depot.

Hundreds of thousands of liters of diesel oil leaked from a pipeline at a major fuel depot into the central city of Da Nang’s public drainage system early Monday morning.

Chaos then ensued for hours as hundreds of local families rushed to collect the oil.

Police and officers from Da Nang Department of Natural Resources and Environment have isolated the site and are investigating the cause of the problem.

Inspectors said preliminary evaluations showed that faulty pipeline valves may have caused the leak.

Investigators also said the leak had badly affected underground water supplies nearby, the area’s main source of water.

Nuoc Man Airport Oil Depot was built during the 1960s. Many oil tanks have been added since then, but the facility is still using the same old pipeline system.

The depot, which is located in a residential area, made headlines in 2007 when four people were killed in an explosion triggered by wielding at the site.
