Downpours kill five and injure nine in central region

Downpours and whirlwinds in the last two days in the central province of Nghe An have caused floods, killing five and injuring nine residents.

The local Steering Board for Flood and Storm Control reported that by September 25 morning at least ten boats were sunk and 50 houses damaged while many roads were flooded.

Of the five killed, three were primary students killed by a collapsed wall on their way to school. At noon on the same day, a high-school student was swept away by flash flood. The victim’s body has not yet been recovered.

In the central province of Ha Tinh, downpours were reported on September 24-25, ranging between 410-440mm. The local Hydrometeorology Forecast Centre said that in the next 48-72 hours, downpours will continue, causing flash flood in some mountainous areas and flood in some delta districts.

A woman in Ha Tinh was swept away by flash flood on September 24 and her body has not yet been found. Many streets in Ha Tinh City remain heavily flooded.
