CFCs, chemicals released from aerosol cans and refrigerators, are to blame for ozone depletion

All chlorofluorocarbons, or CFCs, substances known to damage the earth’s ozone layer, will be banned from entering Vietnam next year.

Taking effect on January 1, the ban is part of Vietnam’s efforts to phase out CFCs and hydrochlorofluorocarbons (HCFC), often used in fridges and air conditioners, the Hydro-Meteorological and Climate Change Department told a recent meeting ahead of World Ozone Day on September 16.

Vietnam committed to the move when it became a signatory to the Montreal Protocol on Substances that Deplete the Ozone Layer in 1994.

According to scientists, Vietnam will need some US$20 million to fully remove HCFCs from the country within the next 15-20 years.

It is estimated that some 3,000 tons of HCFCs are now in use in Vietnam.
