A research center from Ho Chi Minh City-based Vietnam National University has successfully introduced a locally produced 8-bit microchip into a local maritime remote monitoring system.

A pilot project recently carried out in the southern province of Vung Tau’s lighthouse and Buoy No.1 has shown that the microprocessor chip VN8-01 can be integrated into a control system to collect and process all parameters about the buoy’s and lighthouse’s operations, said Ngo Duc Hoang, director of the IC Design Research and Education Center.

All the information then is sent to the center through a text messaging service, Hoang added.

The commercial version of Vietnam’s first 8-bit microprocessor chip, SigmaK3, which was introduced last year, VN8-01 can also be used in electronic products like TV remote controls.

The pilot project was part of HCMC’s efforts to produce Vietnam’s first commercial 8-bit microprocessor chip whose processing speed and addressable memory are expected to be four times higher than those currently available in the market.

Launched last December, the project was invested in by the HCMC Department of Science and Technology.
