The Lawrence S. Ting Memorial Fund and the Phu My Hung Corporation handed out VND8.74 billion (US$490,000) in scholarships and support in Ho Chi Minh City Friday.

The seventh Lawrence S. Ting Scholarships were given to outstanding students for their academic excellence.

Nearly VND3.7 billion was granted in 436 scholarships for 278 secondary, high school students and 158 universities students nationwide for their good academic records.

The scholarship provide VND4.5 million per year for secondary and high school students, and VND10 million for university students.
The remaining funds were handed over to the HCMC Association for Support of Poor Patients and the Child Protection Fund, the HCMC Association for Protection of Disabled People and Orphan Children (each receiving VND500 million), the HCMC Fatherland Front Committee’s Fund for the Poor (VND300 million), the Vu A Dinh Scholarship Fund (VND200 million) and Vietnam Study Association (VND3.06 billion).

At a ceremony marking the donations and scholarships, the Lawrence S. Ting Memorial Fund also announced that Cathay United Bank had pledged to donate VND600 million through the fund for outstanding and financially disadvantaged students in HCMC and the central province of Quang Nam.

The Lawrence S. Ting Memorial Fund has provided nearly VND86 billion ($4.8 million) to educational and charity programs since it was set up in 2005 to commemorate Lawrence S. Ting, late President of the Phu My Hung Corporation and several other companies operating in HCMC, the fund’s director Phan Chanh Duong said.

The Phu My Hung Corporation, a joint urban development venture between Taiwan and Vietnam, has donated VND141 billion ($7.9 million) to charity programs over its 15 years of operation in Vietnam.
