The tropical depression that formed over the East Sea on Thursday and wreaked havoc in the central region has fooled the weather bureau by changing course and heading slowly back towards land.

While the low is weakening, as forecast by the National Center for Hydro-meteorological Forecasting on Saturday, it is not gradually moving away from Vietnam’s territorial waters as the meteorologists thought it would.

On Sunday afternoon, the low pressure system was almost stationary off the coast, and fast running out of steam.

The rain on the central coast has eased considerably, but the weatherman warned on Saturday that the central highlands and the southern region could experience more rainstorms due to the tropical low and the southwest monsoon.

Only 30-80 millimeters of rain fell on Quang Nam, Quang Ngai and nearby provinces on Saturday, a fraction of the 280-430 millimeters that inundated the region the previous day, the Central Highlands and Central Flood and Storm Protection Center reported.

Three children and three adults died because of the storm, according to the center. In addition, five people were injured by lightning strikes in Quang Ngai.

Over 8,700 hectares of rice had been destroyed as of Saturday afternoon, with Quang Tri the hardest-hit area.

Other property losses include 61 tons of farmed fish and prawns swept away by the floodwaters, and 11 small irrigation works and 200 cubic meters of dyke destroyed.

As the massive clean-up gets going and the losses are counted, nearly 6,000 boats with 37,025 crew members from Khanh Hoa, Phu Yen, Binh Dinh, Quang Ngai, Quang Nam and Da Nang remain at sea.
