VietNamNet Bridge – By September 7, there had been 10,918 petitions submitted for compensation from Vedan for losses caused by pollution totalling nearly VND1.3 trillion.

Farmers living along the Thi Vai river are awaiting Vedan’s compensation.

Chairman of the Dong Nai Province Farmers’ Association, Tran Nhu Dong, told VietNamNet on September 7 that Vedan announced it would meet with representatives of the Farmers’ Associations of Dong Nai, Ba Ria Vung Tau and HCM City to discuss the claims for compensation of thousands of farmers in these provinces.

Previously, farmers’ claims for compensation totalled 569.6 billion dong but Vedan offered a compensation package of only 25 billion dong. Farmers didn’t agree with Vedan and asked to meet with the firm’s general director or chairman.

The Taiwanese-invested Vedan sodium glutamate company was caught red-handed discharging untreated waste water into the 80km-long Thi Vai River, with a daily volume of 44,800cu.m, last September. The firm had been discharging waste water into the river since 1994.

Vedan’s waste water spread through HCM City, Dong Nai and Ba Ria – Vung Tau provinces, causing serious environmental pollution and losses for thousands of farmers along the river.
