A social insurer in Ho Chi Minh City has filed a lawsuit against a Taiwanese firm which suddenly shut down on Saturday without paying workers’ salaries and social insurance contributions.

Around 550 workers of the Duc Quan Garment Ltd. in District 8 were taken by surprise when they saw the closed door on Saturday and their employer was nowhere to be found.

The company had already withdrawn all funds from its bank account and ended contracts with its customers, it was found. It still owed around VND1 billion (US$56,000) in wages and VND1.8 billion of the workers’ social insurance contributions to District 8’s Social Insurance Agency, which already sued the company.

The District 8 Labor Union has also asked the workers to authorize the union to sue the company on their behalf. The remaining property of the company has been sealed and the city police have been asked to ban the Taiwanese general director from leaving Vietnam.

Bosses at more than ten firms in the city have suddenly disappeared this month, leaving more than 1,000 workers empty handed.

Meanwhile nearly 140 workers who lost their jobs for the same reason early this year at the South Korean Sin B and Malaysia-funded Hoang Nghiep garment firms were yet to receive any support as ordered by the Prime Minister.

The PM’s order said the city or provincial administrations have to use their budget to pay the workers whose bosses have left.
