The Song Be golf course in Binh Duong Province

The Ministry of Environment and Natural Resources has started an inspection of the golf courses in the southern province of Binh Duong.

Phan Minh Tuan, who is overseeing the task, said the inspectors would look into the allocation of land for the golf courses and the land compensation process.

They will also check the use of water and chemicals at the courses.

The inspection, lasting until October 23, will cover the province’s four operating golf courses, which have a combined area of more than 1,200 hectares, and the two under development.

All six will be evaluated to see if they are or will be more profitable than the agricultural production they supplanted, Tuan said.

Prime Minister Nguyen Tan Dung in August asked the Ministry of Planning and Investment to eliminate 51 of Vietnam’s 166 operational and planned golf courses.

Provinces and cities were also told not to allow golf courses to be built on farmland, especially for growing rice.
