More than half of the buses and trucks checked in Hanoi were found violating gas emission regulations, the city traffic and environment police said Friday.

After three days checks that ended Friday evening, Hanoi police and officers from Vietnam Register had checked 93 cars at My Dinh and Giap Bat passenger bus stations and found gas emissions from 43 contained more toxins than permitted.

Among the vehicles were 34 public buses, eight trucks and seven inter-provincial passenger buses.

The vehicles were fined VND100,000-200,000 (US$5.60-11.2) each and were barred from plying the roads until some old components are changed and maintenance work done to ensure emission standards are met.

Emission tests will be conducted on all buses and trucks nationwide following the Hanoi inspection, said the Environment Police Department under the Ministry of Public Security.
