LookAtVietnam – Vocational training programmes have had an estimated 1.64 million attendees this year, a jump of about 1 million above the average in recent years.

Viet Nam now has 102 vocational training colleges, 265 vocational high schools, 864 vocational training centres and thousands of vocational training centres in businesses.

This statement was made by Director General of the General Department of Vocational Training Nguyen Tien Dung at the 40th founding ceremony of the general department in Ha Noi yesterday, October 9, with the attendance of National Assembly’s vice chairman Uong Chu Luu and Minister of Labour, Invalids and Social Affairs Nguyen Thi Kim Ngan.

Dung said the high number of enrolled students would help vocational training programmes provide well-qualified human resources for the country’s development.

Statistics released from the department show that a vocational training network has been developed in 600 districts, towns, handicraft villages and industrial parks nationwide.

However, he warned that more work needed to be done, since the country’s vocational system did not match the demands of society and businesses in quality or type of training.

Minister Ngan said the sector should establish a modern vocational training system which creates jobs and increases the competitiveness of human resources.

Ngan also asked the department to complete vocational training development plans and develop vocational training that would train people up to regional and international levels.

In addition, training for rural labourers, especially in the country’s 62 poorest districts, should be strengthened.

At the ceremony, the general department was awarded the Labour Order, Second Class. As may as 40 people were honoured for their contributions to vocational training.

It also donated VND50 million (US$2700) to people in central provinces who suffered losses from Storm Ketsana.
