Typhoon Ketsanaâs death toll in Vietnam reached 122 on Saturday after the National Flood and Storm Control Center recorded 23 three more fatalities caused when the storm battered the central region Tuesday. | |||||||
The number of recorded injuries nearly doubled in a one day period, with the figure rising from 252 people on Thursday to 520 as of Friday night. Central provinces have reported a total of 12 people officially missing, according to a report the Central Committee for Flood and Storm Controlâs posted on its website. Many areas across the central provinces of Quang Binh and Quang Nam are still under water and isolated, although the typhoon, which killed at least 400 across Southeast Asia, left the central coast Tuesday night. Local and international weather centers are warning that a new super-typhoon, Parma, was detected some 250 kilometers from the Philippinesâ Luzon Island on Friday. And storm Melor is also strengthening in the Pacific Ocean, 2,500 kilometers from Parma. Parma will make landfall on Luzon Island on Saturday night and then linger for a couple of days, said Bui Minh Tang, director of the National Center for Hydro-Meteorological Forecasting. He also said Melor may head for Taiwan and noted that the two new storms were moving in complicated ways and needed close observation. He said it was impossible to conclude for certain whether or not Parma would hit the East Sea yet. But the center said it had detected strong winds in the seaâs eastern waters and had warned boats to avoid the area. In related news, Laos has confirmed that 13 Vietnamese workers were killed and left missing after a flash flood hit Attapu Province on September 29 as they worked on the construction site of the hydroelectric plant Sekaman No.1, local newspaper Viet Nam News reported on Friday. A Vietnamese company is the projectâs main investor, with Viet â“ Laos Power Joint-Stock Company as its main contractor, according to the local English-language daily.
