Typhoon Ketsana had killed at least 164 local people and left 15 missing as of Sunday night after lashing central Vietnam last Tuesday.

Another 620 people were injured in the storm, according The National Flood and Storm Control Committee.

Ketsana has brought devastation across Southeast Asia, killing at least 293 people in the Philippines and 17 in Cambodia, according to AFP.

In the meantime, storm Parma, which hit the East Sea midday Sunday, was still looming with winds blowing at speeds of 89-117 kilometers per hour, Vietnam’s National Center for Hydro-Meteorological Forecasting said on its website Monday.

The tenth storm to hit the East Sea this year, which was some 850 kilometers east of the Hoang Sa (Paracel) Islands at Monday afternoon, would travel southbound at 3-5 kilometers per hour over the next 24 hours, according to the forecast center.

However, the center noted that due to its interaction with nearby typhoon Melor, Parma’s movements will be complicated, subject to change and difficult to predict.

Landslides and floods caused by Parma have killed at least 16 people in the Philippines since it made landfall on Luzon Island Saturday, AFP reported.

The new storm was not moving quickly because typhoon Melor was holding it in place, while a high-pressure area on the Asian mainland was stopping it from approaching the continent, the news agency quoted the Philippines’ chief weather forecaster Nathaniel Cruz as saying.

In related news, rescuers have found a body of one of the 11 Vietnamese workers swept away in a flash flood in Laos’ Attapu Province on September 29, a representative from Da River Construction Company, a contractor on the hydroelectric plant Sekaman No.1 project in Attapu, told Thanh Nien.
