LookAtVietnam – Of its population of 6.4 million people, Hanoi has 482 people over 100 years old, mainly women.

The city’s census and housing inspection, completed April 1 2009, revealed that Hanoi has 6.4 million people, accounting for 7.51 percent of the country’s population.

Hanoi ranks second after HCM City for the population. Compared to April 1 1999, the city’s population increased by over 1.2 million people.

The number of family members has decreased to the current level of 3.63 persons per family. The figure is 3.5 people for urban families and 3.72 for rural households.

The average housing area per person is 17.63 square meters on average, with 21 square meters in urban settings and 15 square meters in rural areas. The number of houses built since 2000 accounts for over one third of the total number of homes.

The survey also reveals that the number of families using expensive appliances increased, with nearly 29 percent of households having computers, nearly one third with washing machines and over half with fridges.

The census is used as the basis for Hanoi to design its future economic and social development strategies.
