Four coal miners in the northern coastal town of Ha Long were trapped somewhere between 36-75 meters underground by a collapsed mineshaft Thursday.

All four men, Ngo Dinh Giang, Le Van Khoi, Duong Van Dinh, and Mai Van Thong from neighboring provinces, were still alive, said Le Minh Chuan, deputy general director of the Vietnam National Coal-Mineral Industries Group (Vinacomin), which owns the Ha Long-based Hon Gai Coal Company.

Rescuers have pumped oxygen into the tunnel and are still trying to make direct contact with the workers.

The workers, with Giang local and three others from nearby provinces, were working for Hon Gai’s Thanh Cong Coal Factory when their tunnel collapsed.
