Ho Chi Minh City will widen several roads leading to Tan Son Nhat Airport in an attempt to ease worsening traffic gridlock near the southern region’s main international gateway.

Under a recent plan approved by the city transport department, Phan Dinh Giot Street will be widened by between one and five meters. Parts of two other streets, Thang Long and Cong Hoa, will be expanded by one or two meters.

The road widening project, set to cost VND1.2 billion, is scheduled to be completed in November.

Traffic on streets leading to Tan Son Nhat International Airport, about 8 kilometers to the north of the city center, has worsened recently as many street barriers have been erected, blocking hundreds of vehicles during peak hours every day.

Before the road widening plan, the Department of Transport intended to build a new road, cutting into the Hoang Van Thu Park, to help ease traffic flows on other street.

The government in Tan Binh District protested the plan, saying the park should not be disturbed. The park is being upgraded, using a VND15 billlion fund set up by the city government.
