LookAtVietnam – Ha Noi is being swamped with more than 9,500 taxis, contributing to traffic congestion, accidents and unhealthy competition,

The committee is considering a call for a freeze on new licences following claims the number of taxis has far exceeded demand.

Khoi has asked the Transport Department to draw up a management plan by the next month’s meeting.

Department statistics show the city has more than 9,500 taxis in 103 businesses employing more than 12,500 taxi drivers, up to 60 per cent of whom come from other provinces.

The number doesn’t take into account unregistered taxis.

Department deputy director Nguyen Hoang Linh said some businesses had failed to ensure drivers had adequate skills and knowledge of road rules.

“This has attributed to illegal parking, careless driving and speeding to get passengers,” Linh said.

The department has proposed municipal authorities temporarily stop granting taxi licences.

Dinh Van Truong, director of Huong Lua taxi company said a plan to manage taxi operation was necessary to increase their quality.
