The pangolins found by Hai Phong Police on Monday night.

Police in the northern port city of Hai Phong Monday night caught 59 pangolins, two of them dead, as they were being carried to a local company warehouse.

The pangolins, weighing more than 200 kilograms (each that weighed one to ten kilograms), were found in net bags in a Toyota Camry parked outside the warehouse of Hoang Truong Ltd. in An Duong District.

Three other Toyotas and six people at the site were brought to the police office.

The police also found fourteen fake car number plates for different northern localities including Hanoi, Ninh Binh, Thanh Hoa and Nghe An Provinces, including two blue number plates for disguising vehicles as government cars.

All the six people arrested denied ownership of the cars or the pangolins (also known as ant-eaters), saying they were hired to carry the animals from the cars to the warehouse.

The police are still investigating the case further.
