Vietnam ranks 56th among 66 countries in information technology competitiveness, going up five places over last year, according to a world research and advisory firm’s report released Tuesday.

In its third annual study into the IT sector, the Economist Intelligence Unit (EIU) took note of Vietnam’s efforts in the field, including its “slow but steady progress” in intellectual property protection.

However, according to the study, despite its rapid growth in the industry, less than 20 percent of Vietnam’s population (86.5 million) own PCs – desktops and laptops – compared to between 60 and 85 percent in most developed countries.

The same situation is also happening in China and India, it added.

The US still tops the rankings this year, followed by Finland and Sweden.

The EIU’s IT industry competitiveness index is calculated on a 1 to 100 scale based on a variety of factors, including a country’s IT infrastructure, human capital, support for IT industry environment, legal regime, and overall business development.

EIU was founded in 1946 as part of the Economist Group, which includes companies selling publications and services under The Economist brand like the newswire Economist.com and Economist Conferences.
