The government has approved a 16-million-euro-plus project to monitor fishing boats with satellite technology, a representative from the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development said.

With the funds, equivalent to some US$23.8 million, loaned by France, the three-year project will equip more than 3,000 local boats with messaging systems and image broadcasting devices that allow them to be monitored while offshore, according to Chu Tien Vinh, head of the ministry’s Bureau of Aquatic Resources Exploitation and Protection.

The project will also include the establishment of a database on fisheries, informing the boats of fish shoals, precipitation readings and other information through the satellite connection.

A hydro-meteorological center specific to fishing activities will also be established as part of the project, which is expected to be launched this year.
